A 27-year-old woman and her 5-month-old daughter died Saturday night after a 22-foot boat capsized near Liberty Island in New York Harbor. Twelve other passengers were rescued from the water and are expected to survive.
Police responded to a report of an overturned vessel near the Statue of Liberty just after 10:25 p.m. NYPD divers located the woman and infant in the water; both were taken to NYU Langone Hospital in Brooklyn in critical condition and later pronounced dead. Fourteen people were aboard the boat in total. Their identities have not been released, and authorities have not confirmed the cause of the capsizing.

The NYPD Harbor Unit and U.S. Coast Guard responded to the scene, alongside aviation and scuba diving teams. The other twelve passengers pulled from the water were taken to local hospitals with non-life-threatening injuries.
